Whole-home dehumidification

How often do air ducts need cleaning?
There is no fixed schedule -- clean ducts when there is a reason to. Visible dust discharge from registers, a musty smell when the system starts, recent renovation work, or evidence of a rodent or moisture intrusion are all genuine reasons. Routine cleaning on a timer for a clean, sealed system is not necessary.
What indoor humidity should I target in Florida?
Between 45 and 55 percent relative humidity. Above 60 percent you get mold and dust mite growth. If you are running the thermostat down to 70°F just to feel comfortable, you have a humidity problem rather than a temperature problem, and a dehumidifier will fix it for less than the extra cooling costs.
Do UV lights actually work?
At the evaporator coil, yes -- they are effective at preventing biological growth on the wet coil surface, which in this climate is a real and recurring problem. Claims about UV sterilizing the air as it rushes past in the duct are far weaker, because contact time is too short. We install them where they do something.
Will duct sealing lower my power bill?
Usually, and often meaningfully. Duct leakage in an unconditioned Florida attic commonly wastes 20 to 30 percent of the cooling you have paid to produce. We test before and after so you can see what changed.
My house smells musty when the AC turns on. Why?
Most often it is biological growth on the evaporator coil or standing water in the drain pan -- both very common here. Coil sanitization and drain treatment usually solve it, and a UV lamp at the coil keeps it from returning.
What filter should I use?
For most homes a MERV 8 to 11 media filter is the right balance of filtration and airflow. Higher MERV ratings filter more but restrict airflow, and on a system that was not designed for the added static pressure that can freeze the coil and strain the blower. We check your system's static pressure before recommending an upgrade.
